Before I did, my ELA colleague handed out a few draft chapters of my own memoir without telling the students who wrote it. When I was talking to the classes, we first discussed the parallel\/similar themes and even story lines seen in the book of Red Scarf Girl and the sample memoir by an unknown author. Both stories seemed still far away from the students. We agreed though that Ji-Li in Red Scarf Girl and the 8-year-old in the sample memoir were two of millions of people whose lives were impacted by the historical event. I wanted to draw it closer and make it more relevant to them so I asked what they were doing when they were 8 and what they would do if one day their parents did not come home. That got students thinking. We then went on to discuss about children being forced to grow up faster during hardship and how one's identity was shaped and reshaped by life events etc. When in the end I told them the 8-year-old in the sample memoir was me, I got this "wow" from the students followed by silence. Then the students started asking about little details when I had to deal with it growing up. One student, who writes very well, asked if I found it sometimes hard emotionally to continue writing my own story. I felt the impact then of my writing as a teacher and as someone they saw right there in the classroom, up and close and very powerful. I regret that we did not have the time to have the students write their own memoir as I wanted to in my instructional sequence. If in the future I do get to do it, where do I get started with the writing part best?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"23505075","dateCreated":"1272560874","smartDate":"Apr 29, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"annehdmac","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/annehdmac","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/te843spring2010wiki.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/23505075"},"dateDigested":1531983701,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Welcome to TE 843 space to keep communicating","description":"Hello, if you're looking to bounce ideas off colleagues, please use this Discussion space.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"23568551","body":"Thanks for setting this up, Anne!
\nI just started implementing my unit from class this week using a wiki. My kids are reading the book, The Giver, and are posting in discussion groups on a wiki I set up. \nSo good to meet you here again. I was afraid of being sort of disconnected right after the class was over. Never.
\nChristie and I have been talking about what is going on with the two books her class and the class I am in: Giver and Red Scarf Girl. I feel my class is more engaged in the classroom discussion than the online, which was originally intended to extend the classroom dicussions. Like I told Christi yesterday, some students simply love it and go all over the place forgetting about the focus of the discussion while others don't like it at all. We stopped the online discussion for a couple of days and went oever the rules required of online disucssion. They went back yesterday again and I would like to see if any difference is there in terms of questioning, sharing and collaborating.","dateCreated":"1272729763","smartDate":"May 1, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"lingzhic","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/lingzhic","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"23585833","body":"Lingzhi,
\nI gave my students a really detailed rubric for their wiki discussions, which is why I think they are really on track on it. It is the one from my core assignment three...if you still have that from when we peer reviewed, feel free to use it\/tweak it if you want. I am seeing pretty much equal classroom discussion\/wiki discussion at this point. I am very glad we have this wiki now to continue our collaboration!

\nWe did have a very general but clear set of directions and rules regarding posting, but when it came to how each specific discussion should be focused, we definitely need the detailed rubrics like yours.
